About Depth of Field
Open-access journal about photography and media culture in the Low Countries
Depth of Field is a scientific open-access journal about photography and media culture in the Low Countries, published in English. Depth of Field considers the camera image both as a medium of art, and as a means of communication in its broadest sense. It offers an interdisciplinary platform for researchers from scientific disciplines such as art history, history, media technology, communication sciences and visual anthropology. It focuses on the publication of scientific articles about the history and theory of photography and media culture in the Netherlands and Belgium, within an international context. Depth of Field also contains a digital version of nearly all articles published between 1984 and 2011 in the serial publication Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse fotografie in monografiën en thema-artikelen (History of Dutch Photography in monographic and thematic articles), better known in the Netherlands as the ‘Photo Lexicon’. Depth of Field intends to connect the development of theoretical research about photography and media culture with the collections of photographic heritage. For this purpose, it collaborates with the researchers, critics and curators of the community network Scherptediepte and with the Dutch Photo Association, the association of Dutch museums and archives with photographic collections. Depth of Field is supported by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
