Auguste Grégoire

Ingeborg Th. Leijerzapf

Abstract

In the world of Dutch photography, Auguste Grégoire’s role was first and foremost that of a collector. Until World War II, he was also active as an amateur photographer. In addition, Grégoire was a board member for many years with the HAFV (Haagsche Amateur Fotografen Vereeniging, ‘Hague Amateur Photographers Association’). Grégoire built up a collection that comprised mostly Dutch photography, with the aim of some day presenting it to a museum. In 1952, he sold his collection to the Leiden University Print Room. With this acquisition, the Leiden Print Room placed photography on the Dutch map as an independent area of collecting.

Biography

1888

Auguste Marie Jean (Auguste) Grégoire is born on 3 April in The Hague as the son of Auguste Josephus Johannes Grégoire (born 1845) and Maria Cornelia Huberta Schols, who originated from Rotterdam. Auguste’s father is registered with the city as a salesman.

Ca. 1901–‘02

Auguste Grégoire wishes to attend nautical school but is rejected. His second choice for a career is to become a painter, but his father refuses to pay for his education. It is unclear whether he studies anything else during this period.

1905–‘07

Grégoire photographs with a box camera with plates in the format 6.5×9 cm. Among his photos is a portrait of a girl, with which he ‘applies’ for work in 1905 with the royal court photographer Henri de Louw at Prinsestraat 99 in The Hague. Grégoire is accepted as an apprentice, without a salary. He is initially an errand boy, but later cuts paper, prepares chemicals, rinses and glazes photos, and pastes photos onto cardboard mounts. After having experienced routine business, he is allowed to make contact prints on daylight paper, to retouch shots, and to assist with making carbon prints. After approximately one year he receives lessons in lighting and working with objectives and props. On Sundays, he is allowed to make portraits (the discount day for clients with limited financial means): six carte-de-visite portraits for Dfl. 1 and three cabinet card photos for Dfl. 2.50. When photographing on location in the city, Grégoire accompanies De Louw, but is allowed only to carry the cameras and tripods. When De Louw falls ill at a later point, however, he is allowed to take outdoor shots on his own.

1907–‘10

Grégoire gives up his ambition of becoming a photographer. In 1907, he leaves De Louw’s studio and plans to develop his skills in furniture sales. He continues to photograph as a hobby.

On 1 May 1909, Grégoire registers in the city of The Hague, arriving from Delft. In 1910, he deregisters from the Amsterdam city registry.

1910-‘53

The Vakblad van de Meubelindustrie (‘Trade Journal of the Furniture Industry’) of 21 October 1950 states [on the occasion of the business’ fortieth anniversary] that the ‘meubel-en-groshandel’ (‘furniture and wholesale business’) Auguste Grégoire has opened its doors on 28 October 1910. The business operates until April 1953, at which time Grégoire retires.

1912

In October, Grégoire settles once again in The Hague, arriving from Lisse. On 28 November, he weds Maria Streng, whom he has met in Lisse. The marriage does not last.

1914–‘15

For a period of eight months, Grégoire is under arms and stationed at the Morspoortkazerne (‘Morspoort Barracks’) in Leiden.

Ca. 1918

After the war, Grégoire does business as a furniture dealer with Dagobert David in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, for a period of time.

Ca. 1920

On 13 August, Grégoire weds Sara Regensburg. The couple moves to Voorburg.

Grégoire becomes a member of the HAFV (Haagsche Amateur Fotografen Vereeniging, ‘Hague Amateur Photographers Association’).

Around 1920, Grégoire enters a business collaboration with ‘Lücker en Steiner’, a wholesale dealer in iron bedframes.

1922–‘48

Grégoire is an extremely active member of the HAFV and assumes various board functions within the association. He is the chairman for the last twenty years. Between 1922 and 1939, he is awarded various prizes for his photographic work in the context of inter-club competition. The subjects he photographs are portraits, animals, landscapes, night shots, clouds, and still lifes. His work has a romantic character, having little in common with the modern tendency towards ‘objective’ New Photography.

Ca. 1933–‘34

Grégoire devises a plan to start building a historical photo collection. His motivation lies in his being witness to the loss of historic material, with no one showing any concern. He hopes to create a collection that is representative of historical techniques and developments, and which also includes choice examples of work done by the best of the Dutch photographers. His intention is to offer this collection to a suitable museum, in commemoration of the centennial celebration of photography’s invention, to be held in 1939.

1935–‘40

In addition to being a furniture dealer with his own business, Grégoire is also the holder of procuration for the Boes furniture company in The Hague.

1937

Grégoire’s collection is shown at the exhibition Foto ’37 at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (in ‘Room Three’, accompanied by modern works).

1939

On the occasion of the centennial celebration of photography, Grégoire’s collection is exhibited at the Hague City Archives. At this time, he has not yet been able to realise the collection’s transfer to a museum.

1942–‘47

Grégoire is chairman of the furniture department and the acting chairman of the home interior division with the ‘Vakgroep Meubileringsbedrijven’ (‘Furniture Companies Union’).

Production in the furniture industry comes to a virtual standstill during the German occupation.

Grégoire carries out various illegal tasks during the war.

1948

On 15 March, fourteen days after having resigned as chairman, Grégoire is bestowed honorary membership in the HAFV.

1951

Grégoire tells his friend Richard Polak that he has offered his photographic collection to the Department of Onderwijs, Kunst en Wetenschappen (‘Education, Art, and Sciences’). Polak advises Grégoire to contact Professor H. van de Waal, instructor/director of the Leiden University Print Room. On 11 December, Grégoire does precisely this in a written letter.

1952

On 19 February, Van de Waal visits Grégoire to view his collection. A tentative agreement is made for the transfer; the necessary funds, however, are as yet to be arranged. The financing is completed in November. On 23 December, Grégoire receives official confirmation from the Leiden University Print Room that his collection has been received.

1953

On 17 April, the acquisition of Grégoire’s collection is celebrated in the Leiden University Print Room with the opening of the exhibition Een eeuw fotografie (‘A Century of Photography’).

On 13 July, Prince Bernhard presents Grégoire with the Zilveren Anjer (‘Silver Carnation’) for the collection and preservation of a historical overview of (Dutch) photography.

1968

On his eightieth birthday, Grégoire becomes the honorary chairman of the HAFV.

1971

On 13 June, Auguste M.J. Grégoire dies at his home at Conradkade 55 in The Hague.
