Abstract

Henri Berssenbrugge may be considered a major figure in the history of Dutch photography. His notoriety was chiefly attained through the distinctive nature of his photography, which involved taking every liberty to manipulate with photographic technique. Berssenbrugge had mastered virtually all of the ‘graphic’ photographic processes applied at the time, including diverse variations of gum printing and the ‘Erwino’ printing process. Berssenbrugge’s photographic oeuvre reflects the various painting styles that came and went during the first half of the twentieth century. Internationally, Berssenbrugge was the best-known pictorialist from the Netherlands, participating in exhibitions around the world and receiving numerous awards. Even in his own country, where his work was both admired and criticised, all were in agreement that Berssenbrugge’s photography possessed extraordinary qualities.

Biography

1873

Bernard Heinrich Wilhelm (Henri) Berssenbrugge is born on 13 September in Rotterdam as the eldest son in the Catholic family of Johann Wilhelm Berssenbrügge, a German textile merchant, and Elisabeth Catharina Warnken, a Dutch woman by birth. After Henri, nine children follow.

1887

Henri Berssenbrugge (he writes his name always without the ‘Umlaut’) attends the ABKTW (Academie van Beeldende Kunsten en Technische Wetenschappen, ‘Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences’) in Rotterdam on the Coolvest canal in Rotterdam. He initially studies in ‘Department A’—’handtekenen’ (‘free-hand drawing’)— but also briefly studies in ‘Department B’—Technische Wetenschappen’ (Technical Sciences).

Circa 1892-‘93

Berssenbrugge fulfils compulsory military service.

1896-‘99

Berssenbrugge lives for several years in Cologne, Germany. He resides at Alte Wallgasse 7. Nothing is known of his activities in Cologne.

1899

At the beginning of the year, Berssenbrugge returns to Rotterdam, where he resumes his study at the academy. On 1 May, he publishes his first work—a design drawing for a stained-glass window—in the magazine of the St. Joseph’s Missionary Society of Mill Hill in Roosendaal.

1900

In May, Berssenbrugge completes his study at the academy by participating in the annual final exam competition. He wins a silver medal. Thereafter, he refers to himself as a ‘decorative painter’ and ‘artistic painter’. He discovers photography through an acquaintance. Fascinated by photographic processing, he borrows his friend’s camera and starts taking photographs himself.

1901

On 22 March, Henri Berssenbrugge registers with the Tilburg public records office, stating his profession as ‘painter’. On 31 March, Pierre Paul van Wulven (born 25 August 1878 in Brussels) and Henri Berssenbrugge open a photography studio in Tilburg at Bisschop Zwijsenstraat M 285 (present-day No. 15). The studio is a branch office of a photo store owned by Van Wulven’s uncle, A. Héron, at Westerwagenstraat 97 in Rotterdam. Héron works together with his half-brother, Franciscus Everardus van Wulven, Pierre Paul’s father.

1902

On 24 July, Pierre Paul van Wulven leaves Tilburg for Rotterdam and emigrates shortly after to the United States. Van Wulven is traveling with Henri’s brother, Frits Berssenbrugge. Berssenbrugge continues to run the photo studio on his own under the company name ‘Au Héron’. Businesswise, the company is unsuccessful.

1906

In August, Berssenbrugge shuts down the studio in Tilburg and returns to his parental home at Eerste Lombardstraat 40a in Rotterdam.

1907-‘08

On 1 July 1907, Berssenbrugge opens a photography studio at Boschje 15 (later renumbered as 17b), where the wood engraver/photographer L.Th. Boelaars has been living up to this time. Berssenbrugge runs the studio together with Gerard Krol, a painter with whom he associates. The two men’s first advertising brochure states: ‘Studio voor moderne Kunstfotografie – Berssenbrugge en Krol, Boschje 15, Rotterdam’ (‘Studio for Modern Art Photography – Berssenbrugge and Krol’). The collaboration with Krol is of brief duration. in February 1908, Krol departs for Kortenhoef. Berssenbrugge subsequntly advertises with the text: ‘Studio voor moderne Portretfotografie—onder artistieke leiding van H. Berssenbrugge’ (‘Studio for Modern Portrait Photography—under the artistic direction of H. Berssenbrugge’. From 1908 on, Berssenbrugge maintains contact with Willem Royaards and his theatre company, leading to his first commissions to make actors’ portraits.

1909

Starting in August, the journalist/writer Willem Walraven resides for a short time with Berssenbrugge at Boschje 17b in Rotterdam. In this year, Berssenbrugge shoots photos in Dresden, where he is likely attending the Internationale Photographische Ausstellung (‘International Photographic Exhibition’), in which he is a participant.

Ca. 1909-‘19

R. Leenheer enters employment as Berssenbrugge’s as ‘eerste bediende’ (‘first assistant’) at the studio.

1910

Berssenbrugge visits a number of cities in Belgium, including Brussels, Laken (a neighbourhood in Brussels), Mechelen (Malines), Leuven (Louvain), Dinant, Luik (Liège), and Oostende (Ostend) and takes numerous shots of historic buildings, picturesque streets, alleyways, and scenic vistas.

1912

In May, Berssenbrugge moves from Boschje to Mauritsweg 9b in Rotterdam.

1913

Op 4 September, Berssenbrugge marries Ursulina Cornelia (Corry) Alban, who is twenty-one years his junior. She is the daughter of Herman Alban, who studied with Berssenbrugge at the academy.

1914

On 5 June, Berssenbrugge’s daughter, Urseline Lisette (called ‘Lisette’), is born in Rotterdam. In August, Berssenbrugge is staying at Richard Polak’s in Belgium during the outbreak of World War I. In Bruges, he makes an extensive series of topographic shots.

1916

On 18 May, Berssenbrugge’s son, Hans André Willem, is born in Rotterdam. The family moves to The Hague in October. He sets up his studio and private residence at Zeestraat 65.

1919

On 20 June, Berssenbrugge and Corry Alban divorce. The children stay with their father. On 26 August, Berssenbrugge marries Joanna Maria Josephina Ludovica (Jo) Melis (born 5 May 1891 in Tilburg). Franz Ziegler works as an employee for several weeks. Berssenbrugge’s brother-in-law, F.L.J.A. Melis, works with him for a little less than one year. From 1919 to 1921, E.M. van Ojen is R. Leenheer’s successor as first assistant at the studio.

1921

A. Dingjan, initially working in the studio as a volunteer, succeeds E.M. van Ojen as first assistant. He stays until 1936. Berssenbrugge has his studio renovated (the building was purchased in 1920) by the architect Jan Wils and the artist Vilmos Huszar, who are both members of De Stijl (‘The Style’). The studio’s facade is also modernised. In November, Berssenbrugge signs a two-year agreement with Dr. Erwin Quedenfeldt of Düsseldorf regarding a license for the ‘Erwino Druckverfahren’ (‘Erwino printing process’).

1922

On 18 July, Berssenbrugge receives exclusive lifelong rights to the ‘Erwino Druckverfahren’.

1924-‘29

Berssenbrugge becomes a member of the Haagsche Schetsclub (‘The Hague Sketching Club’), established in 1903.

1925

At the invitation of the company Jos-Pé, in Arnhem, Berssenbrugge, Francis Kramer and Jacob Merkelbach experiment with the ‘Jos-Pé Tri-Colour’ process. As well in the years to follow, Berssenbrugge makes several portraits with this photographic process.

1926-‘30

During these years, Berssenbrugge travels frequently around the Netherlands equipped with his camera. He takes topographic shots of cities and villages in most of the Dutch provinces (excluding Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe and Limburg). Berssenbrugge takes several trips abroad, including Paris in 1926 with the BNAFV (Bond van Nederlandse Amateur Fotografen Verenigingen, ‘Federation of Netherlands Amateur Photographers Associations’), as well as a trip to London in 1928.

1929

Since 1921, Berssenbrugge has set up an exhibition space, where he shows not only his own work but also the work of others. In 1929, he adds a small photo art gallery for the sale of reproductions. Gerard Rutten is brought in as an advisor (Shortly hereafter, Rutten would go on to become a filmmaker.) At the invitation of Piet Zwart, Berssenbrugge takes part in the exhibition Film und Foto (‘Fifo’), held in Stuttgart, Germany.

1934

Berssenbrugge travels to Italy with the Nederlandsche Reisvereeniging (‘Netherlands Travel Association’). He takes photos of the Dolomites, among other sites.

1935

On 10 October, Berssenbrugge is extended membership in The National Geographic Society. As the prizewinner of a photo contest hosted by ‘Film Cappelli & Ferrania’ (‘associated manufacturers of photographic products’), Berssenbrugge travels again to Italy.

1937

De BNAFV, de NAFV (Nederlandse Amateur Fotografen Vereniging, ‘Netherlands Amateur Photographers Association’), the Association Belge de Photographie (‘Belgian Association of Photography’), and the ‘Cinématographie’ bestow honorary memberships on Berssenbrugge.

1939

Berssenbrugge suffers a light stroke and is forced to rest for months. This signals more or less the end of his career, which officially continues until 1942.

1940

During the early days of World War II in May of this year, Berssenbrugge visits Rotterdam in the direct aftermath of the bombardments. He takes photos of the burning city. These shots have never been found.

1941

Berssenbrugge’s son, Hans, suddenly dies of meningitis on 4 March.

1942-‘44

On 1 July 1942, Berssenbrugge’s studio is formally shut down. The house is sold. Berssenbrugge and his wife move to Stevinstraat 300 in Scheveningen. In late November, the couple is forced to evacuate due to the building of the Atlantic Wall. They subsequently depart for Brabant and move to the Villa Blanca at Tilburgseweg 176 in Goirle. In 1944, they relocate to Tilburgseweg 139 in Goirle. During the war, Berssenbrugge spends his time painting.

1947

Berssenbrugge’s daughter, Lisette, dies of complications from polio while abroad.

1959

On 4 May, Henri Berssenbrugge dies in Goirle and is laid to rest there on 8 May.

Mevrouw Jo Berssenbrugge-Melis dies on 19 June in Tilburg.

Discussion

“People think, the machine does not.”

Aphorism recorded in Henri Berssenbrugge’s scrapbook, preserved in the collection of the Leiden University Print Room.

Henri Berssenbrugge’s mastery of photographic technique, knowledge of contemporary art, tireless work ethic, and craving for experimentation were almost proverbial for those around him. In 1910, Adriaan Boer compared him to ‘quicksilver on a plate’. He was described as a friendly, lively type, with intense eyes, prone to wild gesticulation, incessant talking, and always enthusiastic. Just as proverbial was his unbusinesslike manner, a label he had earned based on his distaste for the administrative and commercial aspects of his profession. Similarly, Berssenbrugge was averse to professional associations. It was for this reason that he never belonged to any one group, a behaviour for which his fellow photographers reproached him. In spite of his so-called lack of business propriety, however, Berssenbrugge placed tremendous value on public relations, as expressed in the modernity of his studios and the very contemporary typography found on his stationery, labels, and passe-partouts. He also created tremendous publicity in newspapers and trade magazines with the hundreds of entries he submitted to exhibitions, for which he received almost as many prizes and awards.

Henri Berssenbrugge received a traditional art education with lessons in drawing, painting, and graphic art at the ABK (Academie van Beeldende Kunsten en Technische Wetenschappen, ‘Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences’) in Rotterdam. It was after his studies that he first came into contact with photography—by chance. In a frequently quoted interview with G.J. Speekhout in the October 1940 issue of the magazine Kleinbeeld-foto (’35mm Photo’), Berssenbrugge states that he first became fascinated with photography upon witnessing the developing of plates in the darkroom of an acquaintance, shot in his presence only moments before. The said acquaintance was possibly Pierre Paul van Wulven, with whom Berssenbrugge established a portrait studio in Tilburg a short while later. In photography, Berssenbrugge was entirely autodidactic. Notwithstanding, he profited greatly from his education at the academy, where he had acquired important skills in drawing and graphic technique.

Pictorialism—referred to as ‘photo art’ or ‘art photography’ in the Netherlands—already had its devotees by the time Berssenbrugge started taking photographs in 1901. He soon surpassed all of his predecessors in terms of notoriety, however, by mastering the customary fine printing (‘edeldruk’) processes and developing his own highly personal vision. Henri Berssenbrugge was essentially a portrait photographer who had his own studio. Yet his oeuvre also comprises a wide range of other topics: farmers on their land, artisans, fishing villages, street scenes, cityscapes, architectural shots, interiors, still lifes, nudes, dance companies, stage decors, and clowns. Berssenbrugge was generally more interested in people and culture than in nature. Landscapes without human figures are rarely encountered in his oeuvre.

During his earliest days as a photographer in Tilburg, Berssenbrugge made reportages on agricultural workers, rural families, and ‘cottage weavers’ (a typical vocation in Brabant at the time), in addition to his regular portrait work. He also made a photo reportage on a group of gypsies that had settled in the vicinity of Tilburg in 1903. In this period, Berssenbrugge was still taking photographs without applying any technical manipulation or artistic vision—traits for which he would later become known. In his choice of subject matter and composition, Berssenbrugge’s work is so similar to Vincent van Gogh’s oeuvre that comparisons between the two are inevitable. Occasionally, Berssenbrugge’s photos are almost literal visual quotations of Van Gogh’s paintings. His Aardappelrooister (‘Peasant Woman Picking Potatoes’) and Brabantse koffietafel (‘Brabant Coffee Table’), for instance, can be directly related to Van Gogh’s Arenleester (‘Peasant Woman Gleaning’) and Aardappeleters (‘Potato Eaters’). Berssenbrugge was apparently so fascinated by this artist that he observed the rural life in Brabant through the eyes of Van Gogh.

In Rotterdam, Berssenbrugge made his living from portrait photography. By nature, however, he was far too restless to spend the entire day working in his studio. He frequently ventured out with his camera to photograph everyday life on the street. There were many things to inspire him in the streets and alleys of Rotterdam, as well as the markets and fairs. He liked to photograph people at work, passionately selling their wares, busy with their tow carts pulled by sweating horses, or unloading cargo in the harbour. People leaving church or celebrations during the so-called ‘Orange festivals’ were also subjects he photographed. When looking at a number of these shots, one might think it was the Amsterdam artist George Breitner who was standing behind Berssenbrugge’s camera: the two men’s photographic perspectives of the city are quite comparable in their depictions of people toiling, working, and revelling. Apart from these Rotterdam street scenes, however, Berssenbrugge was less impulsive than Breitner: he spent more time in trying to find the appropriate light and composition. Instead of Breitner, however, a better comparison can be found in the photography of Bernard Eilers, who sought after atmosphere and beauty in the same manner as Berssenbrugge. Both men knew and admired each other, though their contact was never more than chance meetings at exhibitions and jury gatherings. As a chronicler of Rotterdam, Berssenbrugge captured an important historical image of a city that would largely be destroyed only several decades later. He was interested in the day-to-day aspects of life, the poverty, the labour, and the bustling life of the city. These were subjects that also inspired painters in Rotterdam, including Adriaan la Rivière and Johan van Mastenbroek.

Berssenbrugge’s interest was by no means limited to urban living in Rotterdam. Between circa 1910 and 1914, and in the years 1926 to 1930, he ventured outside the city with his camera noticeably often. On his itinerary were numerous towns and cities, both in the Netherlands and in Belgium, with special emphasis placed on small, rural residential areas as well as fishing villages in Zeeland and around the Zuiderzee. Berssenbrugge visited much of the Netherlands, with the exception of the three northernmost provinces and Limburg. The topographic shots of the towns and villages he photographed seem to have been taken according to a pre-designated plan. Berssenbrugge focused on the historic buildings that determined the importance of a town, but he also included shots of the more charming areas and unique views, or characteristic streets and squares. The systematic manner in which he took these images suggests he intended to build a topographic archive. It is conceivable, and even probable, that this was his own attempt to accommodate the nationalist sentiment emerging in the 1920s, which had sparked a trend in the production of books conveying the beauty of the Netherlands. The holding of the Olympic games in Amsterdam in 1928 undoubtedly stimulated the publication of these kinds of books oriented to tourism and business promotion. As early as 1920, Berssenbrugge had contributed to a publication in this genre, entitled Neerlands Volksleven (‘Working-Class Life in the Netherlands’) by D.J. van der Ven. Berssenbrugge’s photos also figured prominently at the 1928 exhibition Nederland in Beeld (‘The Netherlands in Pictures’). In an undated letter addressed to Berssenbrugge, Dirk Coster, a writer from Delft, tells of his plans for a book ‘(…) on urban conservation, and then to be illustrated with exceptionally technical photos. It should be done in such a way, that it becomes a manual for the conservation of every city that has not yet been too terribly ruined.’ In this specific case, the project is likely to have gone no further than the planning stage. Yet Berssenbrugge’s archive would most certainly have served as a suitable source for a publication of this nature. Instead, his topographic photos were used in calendars, such as those brought out by the Albani printing company in The Hague for the years 1932 and 1933. Besides his cityscapes of the Netherlands and Belgium, Berssenbrugge also journeyed abroad, returning home with topographic shots from Paris, Milan, Venice, Genoa, the Dolomites, London, and Windsor.

In the beginning of his Rotterdam years, Berssenbrugge came into contact with the Dutch actor/director Willem Rooyaards. For many years after, he was the official photographer for Rooyards and his Rotterdamsch Tooneelgezelschap (‘Rotterdam Theatre Company’), receiving primarily portrait commissions. These portraits could be regularly seen in the showcases of the Groote Schouwburg (‘Big Theatre’) and the Tivoli theatre. Occasionally, Berssenbrugge photographed stage decors, such as for Jan Fabricius’ play Onder één dak (‘Under One Roof’) in 1915. These were static theatrical photos, probably taken during scheduled photo sessions, which allowed the photographer to freely determine the lighting (he had no choice but to work with artificial lighting) and composition without distraction. It was also in this period that Berssenbrugge took shots of open-air performances. These involved a higher degree of stage action, as lighting conditions were substantially better. ‘Bers’ (as he was known among the actors and eventually his fellow colleagues) also showed more action in his dance photography. Between 1915 and 1920, Berssenbrugge photographed the dance group of Lili Green on various occasions, including the garden of the artist and writer Philip Zilcken, in the Bezuidenhout neighbourhood of The Hague, but also in the dunes and at the seaside. Under the influence of the American dancer Isadora Duncan and her pedagogical notions of ‘reform’, dancing in the open air—barefoot and draped in Greek robes—had also become popular in the Netherlands. Berssenbrugge’s interest in this modern dance genre affirms he was continuously looking to new artistic movements. After the 1910s, theatrical and dance photography fell to the wayside in Berssenbrugge’s work, with his portraiture playing an ever-increasing role.

Berssenbrugge started out in Tilburg—initially in a partnership with Pierre Paul van Wulven—as a regular portrait photographer with a studio where mostly cartes-de-visite and cabinet cards were produced, shot against a painted backdrop. When leaving Tilburg and returning to Rotterdam in 1906, he also began devoting his attention to producing portraits of artists. The notoriety he enjoyed at this stage of his career resulted primarily from his portraits of actors, actresses, and artists. During his days in The Hague, the artist’s portrait would continue to play an important role in Berssenbrugge’s oeuvre. Numerous commissions were obtained through the personal contacts he maintained with artists and their work. In many cases, these artist clients welcomed an unconventional portrait. Berssenbrugge was often given full free artistic license to experiment with the form of his artist’s portraiture, on occasion leading to bizarre results.

While portrait photography was indeed Berssenbrugge’s most important source of income, he was far too restless to be exclusively preoccupied with the daily concerns of running a photography studio. From about 1909, he was in the financial position to hire an assistant on a continual basis for carrying out routine tasks, such as the printing and finishing of photos, as well as the administration and bookkeeping. R. Leenheer stayed with Berssenbrugge for ten years as his first assistant; A. Dingjan for fifteen years. There were many visitors to Studio Berssenbrugge who did not have the privilege of witnessing the master at work behind the camera while having their portrait taken.

In the 1930s, the demand for portrait studios declined, with the economic recession still being felt and more people possessing their own cameras. The period following Dingjan’s departure in 1936 did not get any easier for Berssenbrugge, both businesswise and artistically. He was forced to abandon some of his freedom just to keep his business up and running.

Berssenbrugge placed great importance on a studio that looked good and advertised this on a regular basis. When move to a new studio on the Mauritsweg in Rotterdam in 1912, he addressed his clientele with the following: ‘Diverging entirely from what has up to now been the customary studio, I have created a tasteful interior, where one feels at home, which is first and foremost a requirement for informality and naturalness, ensuring that nothing personal and characteristic is lost during the shoot.’ Berssenbrugge was therefore cleverly combining the psychological effect of ‘feeling at home’ with the publicity value of running a highly modern studio.

In The Hague, Berssenbrugge went on to create a studio that was most exceptional. In 1920, he purchased a building on the Zeestraat, large enough to function both as a studio and a private residence. In 1921, he subsequently had the building’s facade modernised. The studio’s interior was completely refurbished according to a design by the architect Jan Wils, with Vilmos Huszar devising the colour scheme. Both Wils and Huszar were members of the Dutch art movement De Stijl (‘The Style’). The studio was austere in form, but still ‘pleasant in tone’, thanks to the chosen colour schemes: ‘(…) the soft, tender harmony of the yellow, cerise and blue, professionally painted on a grey undertone’, as they were described in De Hollandsche Lelie (‘The Dutch Lily’) in 1921. In a 1922 issue of the magazine Bouwkundig Weekblad (‘Architectural Weekly’), J.P. Mieras observed ‘that Mr. Berssenbrugge had always wanted a space that would be light and free, which he felt was unobtainable when considering the existing aesthetic methods. After becoming acquainted with the work of Huszar, however, he immediately sensed this was the one who could bring him to the realisation of his ideas. The art of the painter Huszar therefore fulfils an aesthetic longing felt for years by someone who was unfamiliar with the new visual representation.’ It remains to be seen whether this last point was true. Generally speaking, Berssenbrugge was very well informed about new art movements.

In the design of Berssenbrugge’s photos one sees the influence of different styles of picture painting: Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Cubism and Expressionism, combined with photographic ‘styles’ such as Pictorialism and New Photography. For a brief time, he also displayed a lively interest in Symbolism. Berssenbrugge’s oeuvre reflects, as it were, the history of both art and photography of the first forty years of the twentieth century. More than any of his fellow contemporary photographers, he closely followed every development in the visual arts in his striving for a satisfying form of art photography. On a regular basis, however, Berssenbrugge was harshly criticised for borrowing from the visual arts. Sometimes these references were almost too ‘literal’, e.g. in those instances when Vincent van Gogh served as his inspiration. Even in his later years, Berssenbrugge was known to rely on visual quotations of this nature, such as in his 1915 portrait of the actress Mien Duymaer van Twist, which, in terms of form, was adopted from a portrait of George Sand done by the photography studio W.& D. Downey in London. This portrait had been publicised in a 1912 issue of De Hofstad (‘The Court City’), a magazine in The Hague. Berssenbrugge clearly allowed himself to be inspired by visual forms of painters and other photographers. His library is said to have comprised chiefly art books, including photobooks and photography magazines.

Berssenbrugge’s ambition was not only to be an important portrait photographer, but also a famous photo artist. To achieve this goal, he built up a collection of his own art photos to be shown at exhibitions. Well into the 1950s, he was still submitting his photos to shows held around the world. In the publicity concerning his exhibited work, Berssenbrugge’s notions on the topic of photography occasionally drew attention. In his first advertising pamphlet from 1907, Berssenbrugge condemned the ‘machine-made prints’, the ridiculous poses, the use of painted backdrops, typically excessive retouching, and photo finishing on unartistic glossy or matte film paper. In doing so, he was distancing himself indisputably from his own studio production from his early years in Tilburg. In a 1918 interview with Holland Express, he stated that—contrary to the painter—he was striving for an objective method of representation, void of any retouching. Berssenbrugge chose the place and the atmosphere for his photo and tried to capture the mood in the best attainable way: ‘I don’t know whether a photograph offers more or less than a painting (…) but in any case, something different that has its own right and purpose to be expressed.’ By taking this position, Berssenbrugge appears to resign himself—rather unconvincingly, it should be added—to the fate of the photographer who ‘registers objectively’. His work nevertheless reveals that his goals were much more ambitious. A justification of his viewpoint made several years later ties in much better with his work. In a 1926 interview published in De Camera, Berssenbrugge stated quite clearly that subjectivity was what he had been seeking all along: ‘Photography art? Foolishness. Art begins where nature ends. Art is not the representation, i.e. the splendid, pure imitation of objects, but a reshaping according to one’s own thoughts, one’s soul.’

Berssenbrugge’s thinking and photography had experienced an important development during these interim years, influenced in part by Erwin Quedenfeldt, whom he had met in the early 1920s via Adriaan Boer. This German artist/photographer and instructor at the Rheinische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt für Photographie (‘Rhenish Institute for Learning and Experimental Photography’) in Düsseldorf, taught with a new vision of photography according to his own processing technique: the ‘Erwinodruk’. This photographic process went much further in suppressing halftones and strengthening the contours than the already existing technique of combination gum printing. In a letter to Berssenbrugge dated 29 November 1921, Quedenfeldt characterised his photos as ‘Line Expressionism’. In Quedenfeldt’s ideas and approach, Berssenbrugge had found an answer to his own form-related problems. In the same De Camera interview of 1926, he described these problems as such: ‘I am grateful that photography has been invented, because it’s such a great tool to quickly record the contours and surfaces of objects. The one bad thing is that the awful photographic plate also registers half tones. Only with effort can you make them again disappear. This was already my view for quite some time, when I saw things as planes and, as a result, was always beset with halftones. Now I am further along and see only lines.’ As the only person in the Netherlands holding a license for the Erwino process, Berssenbrugge was a fervent follower of Quedenfeldt’s tenets. He was even called Quedenfeldt’s best student, and one could perhaps say he surpassed his teacher in this technique. Internationally, Berssenbrugge’s images produced with this photographic process are entirely unique in the history of photography.

During interviews, Berssenbrugge indeed professed himself to be a proponent of objective and unretouched photography until about 1918. After this time, however, frequently reworked his negatives. In De Kroniek of June 1923, his working method is described in detail: ‘With the image obtained from the shot that has been taken, after the photographer in him has done his duty, the artist Berssenbrugge now goes to work. And what his eye has retained of the image’s characteristic elements, he sketches with his hand onto the negative: he does no retouching, but adds the product of his own vision to the mechanically made image, makes, as he deems best, a woodcut or etching of it, or transforms it into a sharp, raw drawing. His talent as a graphic artist therefore created something new, with the photographic shot serving merely as a rough sketch, as a delineation, as a model.’

Berssenbrugge worked with virtually every technique that existed or was being developed in his day. In his early years as a photographer, he made daylight prints, including glossy collodion and matte albumen. Platinum, Fresson and carbon printing processes belonged to his repertoire, albeit with less frequency. He also experimented with oil and paint printing, Höchheimer, and combination gum printing. In addition, he made numerous prints on bromide paper, be it coloured or non-coloured, and in the late 1930s, he printed photos on wood, calling them ‘xylo photos’. A noteworthy phenomenon in Berssenbrugge’s oeuvre is that he reused his old shots, taking photos made in his early years and reprinting them twenty or thirty years later using fine printing (‘edeldruk’) processes. This approach places him more in the category of an artist who wishes to instil artistry in his work, rather than that of a photographer seeking documentary significance.

Berssenbrugge shot his photos with cameras of various formats. Studio shots were generally taken with an 18×24 cm studio camera, which he also used outdoors to photograph landscapes. His topographic shots were chiefly taken on glass plates in the formats 9×12 cm (until ca. 1927) and 6×9 cm (after 1927). For the 9×12 cm format, he also used Reflex and Ihagee cameras. Starting in 1925, he as well turned to the Jos-Pé Tri-Colour camera. Around 1930, he also took photos in a 6×6 cm format. From 1932 on, he usually worked with a Leica, i.e. with 35 mm film.

Berssenbrugge’s chosen techniques corresponded greatly with his ideas concerning photography as an art form. He sought ways to achieve abstraction in photography. He was initially influenced by Impressionism, with photos chiefly comprising gradations of light and tone. From the 1920s, however, he aligned himself with expressionist graphic art, working mainly with surfaces and lines. He adapted his technique according to his design choices: (combination) gum printing was the perfect process for working in the Impressionist sphere. The Erwino printing process proved to be excellent for so-called ‘Line-Expressionism’. Both processes gave him the best possible opportunity to achieve abstraction. The Erwino printing technique was different than gum printing, in part because one works with a positive print or positive enlargement on negative paper (a positive slide on paper). The printing plate (Erwino plate) is a glass plate coated with a gelatin layer sensitised to light with bichromate. The image is copied in the gelatin using a positive. When brought into contact with water, the unexposed areas of the gelatin then swell, resulting in a negative relief on the plate. The inked plate is then printed with a hand press. In the Netherlands, the Erwino printing technique was described in detail for the first time in H.J. Scheffer’s 1967 monograph on Berssenbrugge.

For a short while, Berssenbrugge as well applied another one of Erwin Quedenfeldt’s discoveries, i.e. the photographic production of symmetrical patterns based on natural forms via the so-called ‘Rapportier Device’. In collaboration with the camera company Ernemann, Quedenfeldt had developed a camera with special attributes, referred to as the ‘Globus’, intended for “die Herstellung von Web- und Druckmustern, Ornamenten usw. auf photographischem Wege” (‘the production of patterns for weaving and printing, ornaments etc. through photographic means’). The device provided a method for assisting illustrators with the composition and elaboration of patterns, for instance, for wall coverings and weaving. The glass negative to be exposed to light was placed in a special cartridge with an adjustable dial behind a vignette with a crop of either one-half, one-quarter, or one-eighth of the total negative of 13×13 cm. The cartridge was then inserted into the camera. By sliding the negative with a handle, the plate was then exposed to light in segments. In doing so, the sample pattern was registered two, four or eight times on a single negative. Berssenbrugge experimented with this device, not necessarily to make industrial patterns, but rather to devise his own artistic creations. He combined the ‘Rapportier’ patterns with photograms.

From the late 1920s to the mid-1930s, Berssenbrugge was open to new developments in photography. Influenced by New Objectivity, he began photographing in a form that was more pure, according to the idiom of New Photography. He experimented with photograms, bird’s-eye perspectives, close-ups, textural shots of shiny metals, cast shadows, and the framing of the photo. It was precisely these ‘New Objectivist’ bromide photos that inspired Piet Zwart to invite Berssenbrugge—as the sole representative of the older generation—to participate in the exhibition Film und Foto (Fifo, ‘Film and Photo’), held in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1929. Among Berssenbrugge’s entries to this exhibition was a photo depicting the head of a woman wearing an African mask that was highly reminiscent of similar photos taken by Man Ray.

As mentioned before, Berssenbrugge began using the modern Leica camera in 1932, which by this time had become quite popular. He still tried to keep up with the latest trends. Berssenbrugge might perhaps not have resorted to fine printing processes again after this time had he been more adept at the bromide printing process. In this specific area, however, he was never to become a ‘master printer’. Moreover, it was Berssenbrugge’s strong conviction that manipulating the applied technique was the only way to achieve personal expression in photography: an approach for which bromide printing was scarcely suitable.

Berssenbrugge was one of the few photographers who had the honour of being exposed to a large audience via newspapers and magazines on a regular basis. In his book on Berssenbrugge, Scheffer suggested that the one person most likely responsible for the many newspaper accounts of all his exhibitions was Berssenbrugge himself. He did so by continuously alerting editors to his activities and providing them with up-to-date information. Berssenbrugge’s contacts in the art world, however, also ensured him publicity. In 1914, for instance, the art critic Bernard Canter wrote a review of Berssenbrugge’s exhibition at the Rotterdamsche Kring (‘Rotterdam Society’) in the weekly Holland Express, a magazine purporting to be a platform for the ideas of the modern art movement at this time. Canter spoke approvingly of Berssenbrugge’s photography, but also made it immediately clear in which area it was to be categorised: ‘His work has meaning. They are documents of life. They will increase in value over the years, particularly in historical value. He transforms what is transitory into a lasting image, and precisely because he presents the image as an objective representation, albeit chosen subjectively, he has found an area of functionality for photography in its own right, one which stands not opposite the subjective representation of the painter or drawer, but rather alongside it, sometimes supplementing, sometimes even clarifying and justifying, by for instance demonstrating that some works by Impressionist painters were less fantastic or subjective than was previously thought, but often also completely isolated, thereby establishing photography’s prerogative, in spite of its mechanical process, as an artistic activity. Berssenbrugge is not simply a photographer, but rather an artist who takes photographs.’

The painter and graphic artist Peter van den Braken responded ecstatically to Berssenbrugge’s 1923 exhibition in Kunstzaal Kleijkamp (‘Art Hall Kleijkamp’, an art dealership/gallery in The Hague): ‘Berssenbrugge! Not he ’employed’ by the machine, but it serving him! It is not he who is subjected to the size, strength and focusing eye of the camera: the lens! Aware, knowing that everything is a means; the machine, necessity; each new opportunity a path, to the spiritualisation of things; transformation, therefore enriching what can be seen, as a goal.”

Yet it was not only praise that came Berssenbrugge’s way. In response to the same exhibition in Kunstzaal Kleijkamp, the author of an anonymous letter warned he was heading in the wrong direction: ‘ (…) The photographer adheres to painting as a guideline (…) But in pure art, leading is more important than following, preceding more important than imitating. The photographer of the approaching future, who truly wishes to create a new photographic art, must therefore begin with avoiding all imitation, direct or removed, of painting and its objectives as well of literature and its objectives. Only then will he be able to realise the essence of the photo.’ With these prophetic words, one sees New Photography appearing on the horizon. Among Berssenbrugge’s colleagues, the opinions regarding his photography were just as mixed. His personal belief that, when it came to making photographic art, it was the end result that counted and not the method —’People think, the machine does not’ was Berssenbrugge’s credo—was respected, but also criticised in photographers’ circles. In the trade journals, befriended colleagues such as Bernard Eilers and Adriaan Boer were particularly critical of the lack of authenticity that this kind of photography entailed. Among professional photographers, Berssenbrugge had very few true followers. Franz Ziegler and Francis Kramer were the exceptions, sharing both his vision and working method. It was the world of amateur photography from which Berssenbrugge received the greatest praise. Although he was highly admired in these circles, here too there were very few true disciples.

In the early decades of the twentieth century, Henri Berssenbrugge stood at the pinnacle of art photography in the Netherlands, together with Bernard Eilers. In addition to its unmistakable artistic quality, there is also an important documentary aspect to his work. It serves as a visual resource for sociohistorical research when considering, for instance, his early reportages on rural life around Tilburg and urban living in Rotterdam. Berssenbrugge’s photography is also valuable for its portraits of famous people from the Dutch cultural world.

Always searching for new opportunities to revitalise his work, Berssenbrugge regularly crossed over the ‘accepted boundaries’ of photography. As a result, he sometimes found himself far removed from the characteristic traits of the medium, with his work taking on an almost graphic quality. In the history of Dutch photography, Henri Berssenbrugge’s oeuvre holds a special place, both in terms of the personal vision it radiates as well as the high level of technique and artistry, to say nothing of its sheer size. Due to its unprecedented diversity, Berssenbrugge’s work has had a great influence on Dutch photography and garnered significant admiration at the international level.
